Does Ohio license behavioral health and addiction treatment programs?

Ohio certifies community mental health and addiction services providers. Initial applicants since October 3, 2023 and renewals since October 1, 2025 must be accredited by The Joint Commission, CARF, COA or another body the director accepts; prevention services are excepted. A certification fee applies.

  • State certification
  • Certification of certifiable services and supports
  • Issued by Ohio Department of Behavioral Health

What does accreditation do for a Ohio license?

Accreditation is a condition of initial and renewed certification. With current, appropriate accreditation and the fee paid, the director certifies without further evaluation. Providers report accreditation changes within ten days.

What does an opioid treatment program need in Ohio?

A new OTP location may not sit within 500 feet of a school, licensed child care center or child-serving agency unless each one sends a letter of support.

  • State license: A separate department OTP license, issued only to a certified community addiction services provider; it lasts two years, or one year when the director has compliance concerns.
