Does Nevada license behavioral health and addiction treatment programs?

Nevada certifies SUD programs for each service at each location; a program must be certified to receive state or federal SUD funds, and self-supported programs may seek certification. A residential "facility for the treatment of alcohol or other substance use disorders" also needs a facility license under NRS 449.

  • State certification
  • Division certification of a substance use disorder program (NAC 458); facility license for residential treatment (NRS 449)
  • Substance use programs: Nevada Division of Public and Behavioral Health

Citation: NRS 458.025; NAC 458.103, 458.138; NRS 449.0045, 449.00455, 449.030

How does Nevada license each level of care?

  • Outpatient: Certified by level of service at each geographic location (NAC 458).
  • Residential: Residential SUD treatment facilities are licensed under NRS 449 and their programs certified under NAC 458.

Citation: NAC 458.138; NRS 449.00455

What does a Nevada license cost?

  • Initial: $100 per level of service (as of 2026-10-10)
  • Renewal: $100 per level of service (as of 2026-10-10)
  • Per site: $50 per geographic location certified with an endorsement

Citation: NAC 458.138

How often does a Nevada license renew?

  • Due Recertification application within 60 days before the current certification expires; a certification lasts up to 2 years

What does Nevada require for owners, sales and moves?

  • Ownership change or relocation: Certification is not transferable. Adding a service needs a new-service application and fee; operating from a new location needs a recertification application.

Citation: NAC 458.128, 458.133

What does an opioid treatment program need in Nevada?

  • State opioid treatment authority: Bureau of Behavioral Health Wellness and Prevention (Carson City)
  • State license: The program is certified for outpatient and ambulatory detoxification services, and its facility is licensed by the Division as a facility for treatment with narcotics (NAC 449.154 to 449.15485).
  • 15 opioid treatment programs in 2024 (N-SUMHSS)
